Seven of the Coen brothers’ best films are included in this must-own box set
As well as the DVD and Blu-ray release of "A Serious Man", the title is also included in a seven-disc box set featuring some of Joel and Ethan Coen's greatest movies.
Over 25 years, the Coens have maintained a career that is almost unique in Hollywood, in their ability to work with big budgets and massive stars and yet remain individual and singular filmmakers. Their debut, the gripping, bloody thriller “Blood Simple” caused an immediate stir in 1984, winning awards at both Sundance and the Independent Spirit awards.
Not to be typecast, the Coens followed this up with the madcap comedy “Raising Arizona” and moody gangster thriller “Miller’s Crossing”, setting a pattern that they continue to this day, with every film very different to its predecessor.
Their filmography is packed with both critical and commercial smashes. In terms of awards, the dark, strange “Barton Fink” won the coveted Palme d’Or at the 1991 Cannes Film festival, while thrillers “Fargo” and “No Country For Old Men” both scored big at the Oscars.
Joel and Ethan have also worked with some of the biggest stars in the business. Actors that have regularly appeared in their films include George Clooney, John Goodman, John Turturro and Holly Hunter, while the likes of Tom Hanks, Catherine Zeta-Jones, Brad Pitt and Nicolas Cage have all starred in their movies.
In terms of the titles in the box set, “Blood Simple” and “Barton Fink” show the darker side of their filmmaking while “The Hudsucker Proxy” and “The Big Lebowski” are uproarious comedy classics. Completing the set are “Intolerable Cruelty” and the recent spy spoof “Burn After Reading” two of their hilarious collaborations with George Clooney. This set shows the brothers at their very best, with some brilliant and entertaining movies sure to appeal to all film fans.
